Visa requirements change rapidly. The following points are valid as of May 2026 and should be verified on the official portals before departure.
- Ghana – new e-Visa/ETA system (effective May 25, 2026): Ghana has introduced a national e-Visa/ETA portal (evisa.immigration.gov.gh). Holders of African passports travel free of charge (free ETA); for non-African travelers—including Germans—the service fee is currently US$ 260, and a decision is typically made within 48 hours. The visa requirement remains in effect. The previous procedure via the Berlin embassy may still be relevant on a transitional basis – be sure to check the official portal.
- Kenya – eTA fee: The eTA currently costs approx. 30 USD (approx. 20–30 USD depending on category), not ~51 USD. Citizens of numerous African countries are exempt from the eTA fee.
- Uganda – Ebola (Bundibugyo): On May 15, 2026, an Ebola outbreak (an imported case from the DR Congo) was confirmed. No blanket travel warning, but observe the precautionary and hygiene measures issued by the Federal Foreign Office (avoid hospitals, funerals, and large crowds; seek medical attention if symptoms develop within 21 days of your stay).
- Kenya – Security: Increased risk of terrorism (Al-Shabaab); travel to the North Rift region (Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana) and the border area with Somalia (including Lamu) is strongly discouraged. Nationwide demonstrations/strikes (suspended as of May 19, 2026) and fuel shortages are possible.
