Ghanaian citizens generally require a visa for every entry into Germany, regardless of whether they intend to stay for a short period (up to 90 days) or a long period. The German Embassy in Accra is responsible for visa applications from persons with their habitual residence in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; its Consular and Visa Section processes all Schengen and national visas for these three countries.
The most important visa types in the context of Ghana → Germany are:

  • Schengen visas (short stays up to 90 days, e.g., tourism, visits, business trips).
  • National visas (stays exceeding 90 days, e.g., study, training, work/skilled workers, family reunification, au pair, volunteer service, research).
    Legal basis:
  • Residence Act (AufenthG), including the English version “Act on the Residence, Economic Activity and Integration of Foreigners in the Federal Territory”.
  • Schengen Visa Code, Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009, English consolidated version.
  • Employment Ordinance (BeschV) in English (“Ordinance on the Employment of Foreigners”).
  • Skilled Immigration Act, implemented through amendments to the AufenthG and the BeschV (clearly explained on “Make it in Germany”).
