5.1 Overview: Work and Skilled Worker Visas via Accra
Ghanaian, Liberian, and Sierra Leonean nationals require a corresponding work or skilled worker visa for any gainful employment in Germany. The Embassy in Accra groups the following categories under “Employment and Qualification Measures”:
- Visas for skilled workers.
- Visas for au pairs.
- Visas for highly qualified individuals / EU Blue Card.
- Visas for vocational training and continuing vocational education.
- Visas for volunteer service.
- Visas for research.
- Visas for Opportunity Card.
- Visas for qualification measures and recognition partnerships.
- Visas for nursing assistants.
Some of these applications can be prepared entirely via the Consular Services Portal (Skilled Workers with academic background, Skilled Workers with recognized vocational training, Blue Card, Opportunity Card).
5.2 Skilled Workers with Recognized Vocational Training or Professional Experience
For qualified skilled workers with a vocational qualification or relevant professional experience, the provisions for skilled workers under the Residence Act (AufenthG) and the Regulation on the Admission of Skilled Workers (BeschV) apply; the Embassy in Accra refers to specific information sheets.
Basic requirements:
- Recognized qualified vocational training or proven professional experience at the skilled worker level (recognition in Germany is often required).
- Concrete job offer (employment contract) with details on duties, salary, working hours, and duration.
- Salary and working conditions must meet German standards; if applicable, approval from the Federal Employment Agency in accordance with the Skilled Workers Regulation (BeschV).
Documents (Information Sheet “Visa for Skilled Workers” – typical sample): - Valid passport + copy.
- National visa application form + declaration pursuant to § 54 AufenthG.
- 3 biometric passport photos.
- Resume.
- Proof of professional qualifications and work experience (diplomas, certificates, employment references), approval of recognition if applicable.
- Employment contract/job offer.

- If applicable, prior approval from the Federal Employment Agency.
- Proof of language proficiency (German) as required by the employer or the recognition authority.
- Health insurance, visa fee of €75 at the German Embassy.
5.3 EU Blue Card (highly qualified professionals)
The EU Blue Card is a specialized residence permit for foreign academics and individuals with equivalent qualifications who earn above-average incomes. The Embassy in Accra processes Blue Card applications under “Visa for highly qualified / Blue Card EU”; parallel rules are set forth in Section 18g of the Residence Act (AufenthG).
Key requirements:
- German or comparable foreign university degree (comparability is determined via ANABIN or ZAB assessment).
- Specific employment contract for a position corresponding to the qualification, minimum duration 6 months.
- Minimum gross annual salary: €50,700 (general threshold for 2026) or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and for career starters/cases with BA approval.
Documents (in addition to standard documents): - University transcripts + proof of recognition/comparability.
- Employment contract stating salary.
- If applicable, BA approval if the general salary threshold is not met.
Advantages: faster pathways to a settlement permit (usually after 21–33 months), easier family reunification (no A1 language certificate required for spouses) and high mobility within the EU.
5.4 Vocational Training Visa
Purpose: To undertake qualified vocational training in a recognized skilled occupation in Germany.
Special provisions according to the “Visa for Vocational Training” information sheet:
- Training allowance must be at least €822 net/€990 gross in the first year (as of the date of the information sheet); if the allowance is lower, a blocked account or other proof of financial means is additionally required.
- Alternatively: School-based education/further training with proof of self-financing.
Documents: - Training contract specifying duration, remuneration, and place of work.
- School diplomas and, if applicable, proof of previous work experience.
- Language proficiency (usually German, often at least B1 level).
5.5 Qualification Measures and Recognition Partnerships
In cases where a foreign professional qualification has not yet been fully recognized, the Residence Act (AufenthG) and the Recognition Ordinance (BeschV) allow for participation in qualification measures or recognition partnerships in Germany. The Embassy in Accra provides specific information sheets for this purpose.
Typical documents: Recognition notice with identified deficiencies, qualification plan, agreement with a German employer/sponsor, proof of financial means, and health insurance.
5.6 Opportunity Card
The Opportunity Card is a points-based system for job seekers; applications can be submitted via the Consular Services Portal. Requirements and points are based on the Residence Act (including qualifications, work experience, language skills, age, and ties to Germany); detailed criteria are explained on “Make it in Germany.”
